Cost Reduction and Efficiency Improvement: Mercedes-Benz to Establish R&D Center at German Headquarters

Today, Mercedes-Benz inaugurated the "Mercedes-Benz eCampus," a new battery research and development center at its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. Covering 10,000 square meters, the facility plans to produce tens of thousands of batteries and will include a battery testing and trial center by year-end.

The center aims to pioneer new chemical combinations and optimize manufacturing processes, targeting a reduction of over 30% in battery costs in the coming years. Mercedes-Benz is focusing on advanced lithium-ion batteries with high-energy anodes, cobalt-free cathodes, and solid-state technology to enhance energy storage, extend driving ranges, and expedite charging.

Markus Schaefer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz, stated that designs developed at the eCampus will be shared with partner companies and integrated into future battery cell offerings. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck emphasized the strategic importance of developing expertise in key technology sectors for Germany and Europe.

Earlier this June, as reported by IT Home, the battery joint venture established by Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis (Automotive Cells Company, ACC) suspended the construction of their European electric vehicle battery factory and re-evaluated future development directions, considering a shift towards cost-effective lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
